Horse Grooming Brushes

Manes and tails are the two places on a horse where a dog slicker brush genuinely outperforms a traditional mane comb. The pins separate hair strand by strand rather than dragging through a knot, so you lose far less of the tail you have spent years growing.

Manes and tails

Work from the bottom of the tail upward in small sections, supporting the hair above where you are brushing so the pins are not pulling against the dock. A large brush head covers a tail quickly. On the mane, the same approach lifts shavings, burrs and dried sweat out of the roots without breaking hair at the crest.

Spring shedding

When a winter coat starts lifting, a slicker pulls loose hair out of the body coat faster than a curry alone. Use it after currying, in the direction of hair growth, on the neck, shoulders, barrel and hindquarters. It is not a replacement for a shedding blade on a heavy coat, but it is far kinder on thin-skinned areas such as the flank and the face.

Sizing and care

Choose a large head for horses. Medium and small heads are made for pets and will take too long on a body coat. Our pins are stainless steel, so they will not rust in a damp tack room, and the handle is designed to reduce wrist strain when you are grooming several horses in a row. Rinse and dry the head after use on a wet or muddy coat.
