Brushes for Cavapoos

Cavapoo coats vary more than almost any other cross. Some are loosely wavy like the Cavalier side, some are tight and curly like the Poodle side, and many are somewhere between. What they share is a coat that holds onto shed hair instead of dropping it, which is exactly how mats form.

Line brushing is the technique

Part the coat with one hand, brush the exposed line from the skin outward, then move up a centimetre and repeat. It feels slow the first few times and then becomes quick. Brushing over the top of a curly coat achieves almost nothing, because the surface separates while the layer beneath stays packed.

The soft coats are the difficult ones

A cotton-soft Cavapoo coat mats faster than a coarse curly one, and owners are often caught out by it because the coat feels lovely. If your Cavapoo's coat feels like cotton wool, assume it needs daily work rather than weekly.

Ears, armpits, collar, harness

Cavapoos inherit long ear feathering from the Cavalier side and it mats quickly, especially if the dog swims or the ears get damp. Check under the collar and harness at the same time, and behind the front legs.

Curved heads suit a curly coat

A curved head follows the shape of the body rather than sitting rigidly above it, which makes it easier to keep contact through a rounded chest and leg.
